Pagerank, SEO and the importance of IBL's

Post by KBleivik »

If you look at the PageRank of a page, look at the PageRank of the home (index, default) page, too.

1. Introduction.

Google explains the green PageRank indicator:

PageRank is Google's measure of the importanc of this page.

Put these

define pagerank site:www.google.com

KW's

in the Google search box and you get additional information from Google.

You may also try this

define pagerank

KW's,

but do not rely too much on the results, since there are so many rumours, so much misinformation and so much confusion regarding PageRank.

I wrote an article

"The importance of relevant anchor text in IBL's"
that is absolutely related to your PageRank and position on the SERP's.

I often check the pagerank of a page and the related home page. Let us compare the following two situations for two of the first 10 hits on the SERP's:

1. Pagerank of site 2 and of page 2.

2. Pagerank of site 7 and of page 0.

In the second case, the page may not yet have been indexed by the SE and it may be a more reliable source.

2. Is there a relation between Google PageRank and postion on the SERP?

In Google's own words:

"Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query".

Could it be said clearer:
Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search.

3. Fake PageRank.

Pagerank fraud is becoming a serious problem. It is achieved when offending webistes use a 301 or 302 redirects that point their sites to sites with a high Pagerank".

There is a good fake PageRank detection tool there.

4. PageRank is not unique across Google datacenters.

Look at the MacmillanOnline.net

Today august 30 2006, that site has Google PageRank 6 on all datacenters aside from one

216.239.57.104 where it is 7.

The reason is that the index is not unique accross the internet.

5. PageRank and the green indicator.

The toolbar value is a good indicator of a page's PageRank but it only indicates that a page is in a certain range of the overall scale. One PR5 page could be just above the PR5 division and another PR5 page could be just below the PR6 division - almost a whole division (toolbar point) between them".
